In  2012, we are opening our doors to an amazing performer who’s music was not written about Harry Potter.  In an effort to consistently grow and develop our community, we are so excited to announce that Meghan Tonjes will be joining our amazing Rock Lineup for LeakyCon 2012!

Meghan is a YouTuber and musician with an amazing voice and talent and we couldn’t be more thrilled to invite her to become a part of the LeakyCon family! The past year has been an exciting one for Meghan. Last January, she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres show and she has been featured numerous times on PerezHilton.com. Recently, Meghan sat down for an interview with LeakyCon to help us get to know her a bit better.

How long have you been performing and how did you discover that this was your “thing”?
Can you tell us a bit more about your story?
I started teaching myself how to play guitar about 6 years ago and was playing shows about 6 months after that. As far as it being my “thing”, I think I’ve only started to realize that in the past few years. I grew up loving to sing and writing little stories, but I never imagined I could do either of those things as an actual career. I went to college for Digital Media, so I was really interested in sort of online communities and social networking as a whole and music was sort of a side thing. And then Youtube started up and those worlds collided for me.

The past year has been pretty amazing as far as my music getting attention because of The Ellen Degeneres Show and Perez Hilton. And, being asked to perform at these amazing conferences, like Vidcon or Leakycon, has definitely made me realize how lucky I am. There are thousands of amazing musicians on this site and I feel like I’m living a bit of a dream some days because the people I really looked up to and watched early on are now some of my closest friends.

We all loved watching you perform at VidCon last year, what are some of the favorite shows you’ve played?
Any shows where people show up and are excited to hear my music tend to be pretty amazing!
I recently played a show in Toronto with some other amazing Youtube musicians (Mike Falzone, SongsToWearPantsTo and Gunnarolla).
We had all of these people show up who were singing along with our songs. And, I remember us all looking at each other, like, “All of these people are here because of the INTERNET. That is the coolest thing ever”.

I once played a show in NYC and had pretty much lost my voice. So, during the bridge of “Tell Me” I basically told the audience that we had to pray to baby Jesus so I could hit that high note. And, I kid you not, a grown man dressed as Jesus showed up at my show that night. I also hit the high note. So, I’ve obviously got some sort of in with the big man upstairs.

How did you first hear about LeakyCon?
I’ve heard about LeakyCon just from other Youtubers that I’m friends with. I’ve heard people talk about it in videos and share their experiences of actually going. I also feel like I’m the only one on DFTBA who has never been, so I’m super excited to be one of the cool kids!

Have you ever been to any fan conferences before? (Do you know what you’re getting yourself into?? Mwahaha!)
I wasn’t scared until that ‘Mwahah’! My experiences have pretty much been Vidcon last year and then a handful of Youtube Meetups. So, I’m pretty sure I have no idea what is about to happen. So, please be gentle with me!

You are the first non-Harry Potter-related performer to headline at LeakyCon,
what does that mean to you?
That is crazy! First of all, I feel completely flattered that I was even considered to be a part of LeakyCon. I think it says a lot of about this community in general that we’re so open about including others and really embracing other viewpoints, regardless of things like fandoms. I also feel like I really need to re-read the entire Harry Potter series so I can impress everyone with my sweet knowledge. Or, I’ll just throw ‘Patronus’ randomly in a few of my songs and people will be too impressed to question anything.

What are you most excited about for LeakyCon?
I’m most excited for awkwardly dancing with everyone, especially John and Hank Green. Also, playing my [The Fault in Our Stars] inspired song in front of other people who love that book as much as I do will be pretty amazing.
